What makes old books and media worth more

Edition

First editions, especially first printings, are worth the most. Book club editions are worth very little.

Dust jacket

For many twentieth-century books, the dust jacket is a large part of the value. Missing jackets cut the price.

Subject

Vintage cookbooks, children's books, local history, and craft books sell well in person.

Condition

Tight bindings, clean pages, and no water damage matter. Smells and mold ruin value.

Signatures

Author-signed books can bring more, but only if the signature is real and the author is known.

Often underpriced

  • Vintage cookbooks and community recipe books. Buyers love them.
  • Children's books with great illustrations.
  • Old manuals and how-to books for crafts and trades.
  • Books sold by color or by the foot for decorators.

Usually overvalued

  • Book club editions and later printings of bestsellers.
  • Encyclopedias, Reader's Digest condensed books, and old textbooks.
  • Books with mold, water damage, or a strong smell.

Books & Media value questions

How do I tell if a book is a first edition?

Check the copyright page. Look for First Edition or a number line that includes a 1. Each publisher marks it differently.

Are old Bibles worth anything?

Most are worth very little unless they are very old, rare, or have family records of genealogy interest. Large family Bibles usually sell for modest amounts.

Are old encyclopedias valuable?

Almost never. Most sets sell for very little and are often used as decor or craft material.
