What Is Vintage Clothing Worth?

Old clothes can be the best money in a house or the worst. A pair of 1960s Levi's can pay for the whole weekend, while a closet of 1990s mall clothes barely covers the bags. The trick is knowing the tags, the eras and the few pieces buyers hunt for.

What makes vintage clothing and accessories worth more

Era and tags

Union labels, older brand tags and 'Made in USA' labels help date a piece. Pre-1980 tags usually mean more interest.

Brand and line

Levi's, Pendleton, Schott, L.L.Bean and Harley-Davidson draw buyers. Unknown department-store labels sell on style alone.

Condition

Stains on the front, underarm discoloration, moth holes and broken zippers cut prices fast. Honest wear on workwear is fine.

Size and fit

Older sizing runs small. Larger vintage sizes are harder to find and often sell faster.

Style that is in now

Workwear, western, 1970s prints and single-stitch tees move. Formal 1980s shoulder pads are a tougher sell.

Often underpriced

  • Old work coats and chore jackets, even worn ones, from Carhartt, Lee or no-name makers
  • Military-surplus wool pants and field jackets that look like plain old clothes
  • Western shirts with pearl snaps and embroidered yokes
  • Plain 1980s and 1990s tees with single-stitch hems

Usually overvalued

  • 1990s and 2000s mall-brand basics with no style hook
  • Formal gowns and bridesmaid dresses with no designer label
  • Fur coats with split skins or a strong smell, which are hard to sell anywhere

Tips for selling vintage clothing and accessories

  1. 1Hang the best pieces where people can see the whole shape, and fold the rest by size.
  2. 2Measure pit to pit and waist on every item and write it on the tag. Vintage sizing confuses buyers.
  3. 3Wash or air out anything musty before it goes out. Smell kills clothing sales.

Clothing & Accessories value questions

How do I know if my Levi's are old?

Look at the red tab. A capital E in LEVI'S means the jeans are generally from before 1971. Selvedge edges on the outseam and single-digit codes behind the top button also point older.

Is a band shirt worth more if it is faded?

Some fading is fine and even liked. Holes, heavy stains and cracked prints cut the price. Original tour shirts beat later reprints every time.

Should I wash vintage clothing before selling?

A gentle wash or airing out helps most cotton and denim. Leave silk, wool and fragile pieces alone and let the buyer decide.
